Topic: Common Exotics Emergencies

This presentation is designed to increase confidence when evaluating and managing exotic companion animals in emergency situations. We will discuss many of the emergencies encountered in rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, birds, and reptiles. Attendees will review practical approaches to triage and stabilization, species-specific physiology and history taking, communication with exotic pet owners, appropriate use of sedation and anesthesia, and recognizing clinically significant findings such as shock in small mammals. The goal is to help veterinarians apply their existing medicine skills to exotic species, recognize when additional resources or specialty support are needed, and leave feeling more comfortable saying “yes” when an exotic emergency walks through the door.
